India: transforming perceptions - the journey begins

101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space (Greenham Common)
A collaborative research, training and prototyping project for artists and teachers from three regional centres (Ryde, Hastings and Milton Keynes) to gain high level carnival production skills in the creation of high quality mas-bands to transform popular perceptions of contemporary India. These will be touring to carnivals in the 2017 calendar at each of the centres, plus a regional mela.

Carnival Network South - Training Event and AGM

Carnival Network South invites you to an dynamic and interactive day of carnival training and information sharing. Food and drink (buffet style) will be provided, by our hosts Cowley Road Works, free of charge to delegates.

There will be a range of creative workshops, information sessions and collaborative opportunities for participants to take part in: -

  • Cowley Road Carnival and Emergency Exit Arts will lead a keynote session supported by officers of Oxford City Council and Richmond Events looking at best practice Local Authority engagement. This first session will also be exploring opportunities for joint commissioning of event management functions and joint commissioning of new creative product or joined up touring opportunities. Everyone will get a chance to speak and contribute to this important subject
     

  • Notting Hill carnival artist Kamal El Alaoui will be leading a fun and hands on creative carnival workshop
     

  • High Wycombe based ‘School of Steelpan’ will be offering an introduction to the steelpan, with opportunities to try your hand
     

  • Mandy Curtis from Brighton University will be sharing current best practice ‘Risk’: Crowd Control and Crowd  Management 
     

  • The New Carnival Company, Isle of Wight, will be sharing their presentation first offered at the ‘Power, Performance and Play’ Caribbean carnival conference in Leeds last year: Access All Areas: why are disabled artists currently underrepresented in the carnival sector?  

 

This event is designed to offer sharing and learning opportunities for the carnival sector, by the carnival sector. New workshops and presentations are being added all the time so please get in touch if there is an opportunity your organisation would like to contribute.
